While Grateful Dead tribute act Joe Russo’s Almost Dead was scheduled to headline Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado on April 29, the weather had other ideas. The band moved the show indoors to 1st Bank Arena in Broomfield, Colorado due to the threat of bad weather and JRAD pulled out all the stops to make it up to fans. Official audio of the five-piece’s wild and wooly 1st Bank Center debut has recently been shared by the band and can be streamed below.
Drummer Joe Russo, guitarists Scott Metzger and Tom Hamilton, bassist Dave Dreiwitz and keyboardist Marco Benevento wasted no time in referencing the weather situation as they opened with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Shelter From The Storm.” The first set in Broomfield also featured the JRAD debut of “Gonesville,” a song off Bob Weir’s 2016 solo album Blue Mountain. “Gonesville” was followed by an adventurous “Shakedown Street” to close the first set.
Medeski, Martin & Wood opened the show in Broomfield. Before the second set, Russo, John Medeski, Billy Martin and Adam Morford emerged on a riser setup above the stage. The quartet treated fans to a drum/percussion jam that was followed by a “Dark Star” featuring contributions from Medeski, Moford and Martin. Frequent JRAD collaborator Stuart Bogie also helped out on “Dark Star” and stuck around for the remainder of the show.
Almost Dead’s second set in Broomfield included one well-jammed Grateful Dead favorite after another as the band and Bogie followed “Dark Star” with top-notch versions of “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo,” “Estimated Prophet,” “Terrapin Station,” “The Other One” and “Eyes Of The World.” The five-piece and their guest ended the evening with a pair of extended encores as a “One More Saturday Night” featuring a “Cold Rain & Snow” jam and “Not Fade Away” served as the first encore, while the second encore saw JRAD dust off a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born To Run” after a tender “Ripple.”
