On July 21 Joe Russo’s Almost Dead opened a two-night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The Grateful Dead tribute act has shared a soundboard matrix recording of the debut-filled performance at The Cap.
With keyboardist Marco Benevento utilizing a grand piano the show began with a jam that led to the first electric JRAD arrangement of “Dark Hollow.” Later in the first set during a take on “Playing In The Band” the group interjected a incomplete first-time offering of the Ramsey Lewis instrumental “In With the In Crowd.” Set one also saw guitarist Scott Metzger leading JRAD through “Gonesville,” from Bob Weir’s 2016 solo LP Blue Mountain and closing pairing of “Casey Jones” and “Sugaree.”
Drummer Joe Russo, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, guitarist Tom Hamilton and the other members of the band took turns singing the verses on their second set opening, debut performance of “Deep Ellum Blues.” After “Easy Wind,” a rendition of “The Wheel” saw the band jamming on Coldplay’s “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face” for the first time. “Touch Of Grey” brought a close to set two and the encore was the JRAD debut offering of Bob Dylan’s classic “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.”
