Full Set Video: Marcus King Among Pigeons Playing Ping Pong’s Guests At Peach Music Festival

The Peach Music Festival at Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pennsylvania started on Thursday with sets on two stages. Harrison Waxenberg of Horizon Wireless presented “Reimagined Mushroom Stage Takeover” on the Mushroom Stage. Meanwhile, the main Peach Stage hosted performances from Turkuaz, Twiddle, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Cabinet and The Marcus King Band. Baltimore’s Pigeons Playing Ping Pong brought out members of The Marcus King Band during their set.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong opened their Peach Stage set last night with “Whoopie” off 2016’s Pleasure. The quartet then went with “Porcupine” off their most recent album Pizazz. “Porcupine” gave the band a chance to show off their improvisational chops with an electro-tinged jam. Guitarist Greg Ormont went on to explain to the crowd that PPPP met The Marcus King Band aboard Jam Cruise back in January. Ormont introduced the group’s Royal Horns section of Dean Mitchell and Justin Johnson for “F.U.”

The 90-minute set continued after the sit-in with the catchy “Somethin’ For Ya.” Recent staple “Havana” followed along with the long-time repertoire favorite “Julia.” Ormont then told the crowd, “We had the horns now let’s have the man himself” as guitarist Marcus King emerged from the side of the stage. King contributed a memorable solo to “Lightning.” The version climaxed with Marcus and PPPP’s Jeremy Schon engaging in a jaw-dropping call-and-response segment to the delight of the crowd.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong followed the Marcus King guest spot with a version of “Fade Fast” that featured excursions into Jungle Book gems “I Wanna Be Like You” and “Bare Necessities” within. The band then ended their set with “Fun In Funk,” a song that has quickly become a signature tune for the foursome.
