Fruit Bats Cover The Decemberists ‘As I Rise’
"I’ve always loved this song - it’s always felt to me like some sort of string band hymn reinterpreted into a Exile-era Stones track."
Fruit Bats mastermind Eric D. Johnson prepped a cover of The Decemberists‘ “As I Rise” for Kill Rock Stars. The track is out today as the latest installment of the independent record label’s 30th anniversary series Stars Rock Kill (Rock Stars).
Stars Rock Kill (Rock Stars) features an impressive array of artists such as Nels Cline, Jen Cloher, Mike Watt, Mikaela Davis, Califone and Ryan Sollee covering songs from the entire Kill Rock Stars discography. The series runs throughout 2021 and those who pay $20 will get all the singles in either MP3 or WAV format. At least 30 singles will be included in Stars Rock Kill (Rock Stars).
“The Decemberists honored me with a cover of one of my songs a few years back, so when I was asked to choose a KRS band to cover, the choice was clear,” Eric D. Johnson said in a note shared by Kill Rock Stars. “I’ve always loved this song – it’s always felt to me like some sort of string band hymn reinterpreted into a Exile-era Stones track. My idea was to re-reinterpret it back into some kind of hyper traditional form. This song feels forever to me.” Johnson performed, produced and engineered the “As I Rise” cover.
“As I Rise” was originally released by The Decemberists in 2003 on their second full-length studio album, Her Majesty. Stream Fruit Bats’ “As I Rise” cover below:
