Florence + The Machine prepped a studio album entitled Dance Fever that is due out on May 13. The news of the fifth LP from the project masterminded by Florence Welch came along with new Dance Fever single “My Love” and a video directed by Autumn de Wilde.
Welch recorded the follow-up to 2018’s High As Hope in London as the pandemic raged. Florence co-produced Dance Fever with Jack Antonoff and Glass Animals’ Dave Bayley. The album was inspired in part by choreomania, described as “a Renaissance phenomenon in which groups of people—sometimes thousands—danced wildly to the point of exhaustion, collapse and death.” Florence became entranced with choreomania shortly before the pandemic started and used the imagery and her own experiences with dance to view her compositions from a choreographic point of view.
Dance Fever stemmed from poems and lyrical ideas Welch has collected leading up to March of 2020, when she headed to New York to start recording. However, once the pandemic began she flew back to London and spent the time at home transforming the material with more of a dance-friendly edge. “Dance Fever is an album that sees Florence at the peak of her powers, coming into a fully realized self-knowledge, poking sly fun at her own self-created persona, playing with ideas of identity, masculinity and femininity, redemption and celebration,” as per a press release.
Florence + The Machine previously released singles “King” and “Heaven Is Here,” each of which will appear on Dance Fever. Both tracks were accompanied by de Wilde-directed videos featuring choreography by Ryan Heffington. Now out is “My Love.” Check out its visual below:
