The Flaming Lips dug into the depths of their repertoire for a rare cover of Madonna’s “Borderline” during their concert Saturday at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta. The band purportedly last performed the pop star’s classic song in 2009.
The Flaming Lips recorded “Borderline” with Stardeath and White Dwarfs for a 2009 covers compilation released by Warner Bros. Records. Frontman Wayne Coyne led his bandmates through the unexpected cover midway through their main set, following a rendition of “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1.”
“Some of you may know this song,” Coyne said as The Flaming Lips began playing “Borderline.” The song originally appeared on Madonna’s 1983 self-titled debut album.
