Fiona Apple released a new studio album, Fetch The Bolt Cutters. The record is the first issued by Apple since 2012’s The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do.
Apple began work on Fetch The Bolt Cutters in 2015, holding sessions at her Venice Beach, California home with guitarist Davíd Garza, bassist Sebastian Steinberg and drummer Amy Aileen Wood. Additional, less fruitful sessions were held at Sonic Ranch recording studio in Tornillo, Texas. The track “Newspaper” features Apple’s sister Maude Maggart providing guest vocals, while the title track features guest vocalist, actress Cara Delevingne. Wood’s father, John Would, who worked on The Idler Wheel…, helped engineer the 13-track Fetch The Bolt Cutters. David Wray and Tchad Blake also assisted with engineering.

The title, Fetch The Bolt Cutters, comes from a scene in the British drama The Fall starring Gillian Anderson. “Really, what it’s about is not being afraid to speak,” Apple told The New Yorker in an extensive profile that announced the new album. Stream Fetch The Bolt Cutters below:
