Fan Mashes Video Of Cow On The Loose In New York City With Phish Cow Funk Jam

Earlier today, a cow (some reports say a bull) roamed through the streets of New York City after escaping from a slaughterhouse in Queens. Sadly, the “raging bull” was rounded up and killed but not before capturing the imagination of many NYCers. One clever Phish fan pulled footage of the bovine on the run with a jam from the quartet’s “cow funk” days.
Trey Anastasio used the term “cow funk” to describe the band’s jamming style in 1997. He told The Phish Book author Richard Gehr, “What we’re doing now is really more about groove than funk. Good funk, real funk, is not played by four white guys from Vermont. If anything, you could call what we’re doing cow funk or something.” One example of “cow funk” is the jam Phish tacked on to “Possum” on December 3, 1997 at The Spectrum in Philadelphia.
