Exclusive Premiere: Combsy Shares ‘Villain’ Video
By Scott Bernstein May 25, 2018 • 9:51 am PDT
Longtime Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey guitarist Chris Combs is currently on the road with his solo project Combsy. Last year, Combsy issued their self-tiled debut album via Horton Records. JamBase is pleased to premiere the official video for “Villain” off the Combsy LP.
The Tulsa-based Combs wrote and produced all nine songs on Combsy. Chris laid down the core tracks at Fellowship Hall in Little Rock, Arkansas with bassist Aaron Boehler and drummer/vibraphonist Andrew Bones. Combs then took the recordings to New Orleans’ Marigny Studio, where a horn section of tenor saxophonist Brad Walker (Sturgill Simpson), bass and baritone saxophonist Dan Oestreicher (Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue) and trombonist Carly Meyers (Roar) added to them. The guitarist completed the process in his home studio.

“The song is about the courage it takes to truly be yourself. To be rooted in your truth and speak it in the face of adversity. Don’t let the bastards grind you down,” Combs tells JamBase about “Villain.” Watch the video for “Villain,” which was directed and edited by Dylan Golden Aycock:
Combsy plays VZD’s in Oklahoma City on Monday. A version of the project featuring Combs’ JFJO band mate Josh Raymer on drums then heads to Colorado for a series of dates.
