Guitar Legends Unite: John McLaughlin Guests With Eric Clapton In Nice

Guitarist Eric Clapton wrapped up his European tour last night with a concert at Palais Nikaïa in Nice, France. Slowhand brought out fellow guitar icon John McLaughlin for the encore.

Eric Clapton and John McLaughlin traded licks on a cover of Bo Diddley’s “Before You Accuse Me” to end Monday’s show and the eight-date tour. Clapton’s band for the trek featured Nathan East handling bass and vocal duties, Sonny Emory behind the kit, Doyle Bramhall II on guitar, Tim Carmon manning Hammond organ and keyboards, Chris Stainton on keyboards, plus Sharon White and Katie Kissoon providing backing vocals.

John McLaughlin was a key member of Miles Davis' electric bands from 1969 – 1972 as a contributor to such legendary albums as In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew and Jack Johnson. McLaughlin founded and led the Mahavishnu Orchestra throughout the acclaimed jazz fusion ensemble’s runs.

Eric Clapton and John McLaughlin last shared the stage in May of 2023 at a pair of star-studded tributes to Jeff Beck at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Clapton assembled the concerts honoring his old friend in the wake of Beck’s death. McLaughlin performed “Stratus” and “You Know You Know” each night before joining Slowhand and many of the participants for the “Going Down” finales.

Clapton kept his setlists similar throughout the tour, and last night was no exception. The 80-year-old axeman focused on beloved favorites from throughout his career including “White Room,” “Can’t Find My Way Home,” “Tears In Heaven,” “Badge” and “Old Love,” along with a handful of blues covers.

Originally written and recorded by Bo Diddley in 1957, Eric Clapton put his stamp on “Before You Accuse Me” for his 1989 album, Journeyman. Clapton also stripped down the song on his 1992 Unplugged album.
