Eggy made the most of their time on Jam Cruise 20 with three action-packed sets. The Connecticut-based quartet went big to wrap the action on the Brews At Sea Stage last Thursday (February 29) by bringing out moe. guitarist Chuck Garvey for a Phil Collins tune and axeman Cory Wong to rip on a Steely Dan classic.
The band consisting of guitarist Jake Brownstein, keyboardist Dani Battat, bassist Mike Goodman and drummer Alex Bailey opened their 75-minute set by adding an interesting spin to Big Thief’s “Time Escaping.” Eggy then lit into “Wayless” and “Rosetta Stone” before ending the string of originals with a “Boom Or Bust” showcasing their improvisational prowess.

While moe. wrapped up their performances on the MSC Divina two days prior, Garvey stuck around to enjoy the end of the voyage. Chuck followed an appearance on Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” during the Mike Dillon-hosted Super Jam on Thursday evening by joining Eggy on “Sussudio.” Alex Bailey handled lead vocals on the faithful version of Phil Collins’ 1985 hit. Garvey lit into his solo with passion and power as the quartet varied tempos underneath their guest’s handiwork. Chuck and Jake Brownstein then traded riffs to bring the cover to a massive peak. Bailey urged the crowd to sing along on the final chorus of the 12-minute rendition.
The four-piece quickly made their way through the pretty original “Apology” to continue the frame. Eggy not only knows how to jam but they also have impressive songwriting skills with “Apology” a prime example. Wong took the stage with the band as the wind picked up. Cory added to the set-closing “Green Earrings.” The Vulfpeck guitarist who was aboard Jam Cruise with his solo band mixed effusive licks and rhythms during the structured part of the Steely Dan song. He then uncorked a nasty solo on his Fender Stratocaster.
Bailey and Goodman kept the groove going while Wong, Brownstein and Battat painted outside the lines. Jake and Cory both ripped it up at the same time before they connected on an improvised pattern. Each guitarist had ample opportunity to shine. Jam Cruise 20 may have been the first for Eggy but the band proved they deserve to return.
