Eddie Vedder Covers Tom Petty’s ‘Room At The Top’ At 2018 Oscars

The 2018 Academy Awards ceremony was held on Sunday night in Hollywood. Organizers of the event tapped Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder to perform during the annual In Memoriam sequence that honored those the movie world has lost in the past 12 months. Vedder paid tribute to Tom Petty, who died in October, by covering “Room At The Top.”

Petty once called “Room At The Top” the most depressing song he had ever written. Vedder’s voice cracked with emotion as he delivered a stunning rendition of the song that opens Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 1999 album, Echo. Eddie was accompanied by a string section and an organist. Images of John Heard, Martin Landau, Roger Moore, Sam Shepard, Jerry Lewis, Jonathan Demme and other film industry luminaries who passed were displayed as Vedder moved through “Room At The Top.”
