Guitarists Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile this week announced an upcoming collaborative album and tour in support. While awaiting the first taste of Kurt and Courtney’s collab, this week’s edition of Saturday Stream presents a Spotify Playlist featuring songs recorded by previously successful dynamic duos.
The criteria for this playlist was largely restricted to the teaming of solo artists, or members of bands branching out together to create something substantial beyond a one-off sit-in or guest spot. Situations such as a band backing a solo musician were overlooked in favor of one-on-one pairings like David Byrne & St. Vincent and the recent Taj Mahal & Keb’ Mo’ collaboration.
Making multiple appearances includes David Grisman with Jerry Garcia and with Del McCoury, as well as Danger Mouse coupling with James Mercer in Broken Bells and joining with Cee Lo Green in Gnarls Barkley. Late great Leon Russell can be heard alongside Elton John and Willie Nelson, while the latter outlaw country legend is also featured with Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. Also making two appearances is bassist Les Claypool with both his Duo De Twang and The Claypool Lennon Delirium with Sean Ono Lennon.
There’s a track by 30db which features Brendan Bayliss of Umphrey’s McGee and Jeff Austin and one from the M.Ward/Zooey Deschanel project She & Him. Phish bassist Mike Gordon and Leo Kottke, legends B.B. King and Eric Clapton, renowned vocalists Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones and masters Chick Corea and Bela Fleck are also among the featured dynamic duos.
