After months of legal and public squabbling with his brother, guitarist Dweezil Zappa will finally hit the road with the band formerly known as Zappa Plays Zappa to begin a tour on July 1. Dweezil will tour under his own name and confirmed to Rolling Stone he will perform “pivotal tracks” from his father Frank Zappa’s debut album with Mothers Of Invention Freak Out!.
Freak Out! was issued on June 27, 1966 which makes this Monday the famed double album’s 50th anniversary. Dweezil has dubbed his upcoming tour “The Cease And Desist Tour” in reaction to threats of lawsuits from the Zappa Family Trust run by his siblings Ahmet Zappa and Diva Zappa. The guitarist shared exciting news about what his setlists will include:
The Cease and Desist Tour will feature obscurer selections from Freak Out! including some haven’t been performed live, like the wall-of-sound “It Can’t Happen Here,” featuring Zappa doing multiple overdubbed vocals. “He never played the song live like he recorded it,” said Dweezil. “But we’re learning to sing it in the weird out of tune way that it is, with all these funny utterances throughout. … It’s a completely crazy thing to have happened at all.”
Dweezil Zappa and his band will be on tour throughout the first two weeks of July.
