By Andy Kahn Apr 20, 2015 • 9:15 am PDT

Guitarist John Mayer swung by The Late Show With David Letterman last Friday to appear as the evening’s musical guest. At Dave’s special request, Mayer performed a cover of Don McLean’s No. 1 hit, “American Pie.” Backed by Paul Shaffer & The CBS Orchestra, Mayer worked his way through the over nine-minute rendition of the fabled tune.

Mayer’s appearance at The Ed Sullivan Theater was followed by a trip to Cleveland to induct Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on Saturday night. After the induction Mayer joined a jam with members of Double Trouble as well as Doyle Bramhall II and Gary Clark Jr.
Watch his special-request performance from Friday night on The Late Show.
