Dogs In A Pile hosted a hometown holiday show on Saturday night at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The quintet brought out a trio of special guests, including famed photographer/harmonica player Danny Clinch, as part of a show that featured three debuts.

After opening with “Westward,” DIAP delivered “Look Johnny II” along with “Look Johnny I.” The band then treated fans to a 10-minute cover of the Grateful Dead’s “China Cat Sunflower,” which gave way to “My Disguise.” Next, guitarist Brian Murray strapped on an acoustic for the debut performance of the new original “The Ballad Of Ms. Pepper And Ms. Paige.”

Murray was back on electric for the ensuing “Chop Shop.” An unfinished “Burning Daylight” bled into an expansive “Bubble” before Dogs In A Pile chose the recently debuted “Lazy Susan” to end the first set.

The five-piece kicked off their second set with the Tom Marshall and Anthony Krizan-penned “You Didn’t Hear It From Me.” Dogs followed by welcoming drummer Joey Babick’s uncle Mike Babick on guitar for fan-favorite “Mr. Tooker.” From there, the band debuted a cover of Frank Zappa’s “Peaches III,” aka the synth-flavored version of instrumental “Peaches En Regalia.”

The next portion of Saturday’s second set was devoted to adventurous takes on “Thomas Duncan Pt. 2” and “Thomas Duncan Pt. 3” connected by Ween’s “Voodoo Lady.” More guests kept the show flowing as Clinch added his harmonica to a version of the Howlin’ Wolf blues staple “Smokestack Lightning” and fellow photographer Nick Codina helped on vocals for the premiere of “Christmas Town.”

Dogs In A Pile went sans guests for the rest of the set as they used their own “Rabbit” to lead into a cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” and closed the frame with the beloved “Bent Strange.” The band paired original “Inchworm” and a take on The Killers’ “When You Were Young” for the evening’s encore.
