Dogs In A Pile reached a career milestone on the Jersey Shore Sunday night, headlining their largest show yet at Asbury Park’s The Stone Pony Summer Stage. The rising jam quintet brought out fellow Asbury Parkians Ocean Avenue Stompers Horns to transform the end of their first set into a full brass celebration.
The hometown concert was a long time coming for Dogs In A Pile, who have been grinding on the road since co-founders guitarist Jimmy Law and drummer Joey Babick solidified the current lineup in 2018 with guitarist Brian Murray, keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan and bassist Sam Lucid. Asbury Park’s nurturing music scene provides DIAP with numerous opportunities to develop their own sound, improvisational abilities and interpersonal dynamics.
On Sunday, Dogs In A Pile were greeted with huge cheers as they opened with “Didn’t You Know.” A fiery “Burning Daylight” then the band a chance to stretch out improvisationally ahead of a move into “Dangers Of Rah Rah” for another action-packed adventure.
Dogs In A Pile threw back to their at the indoor Stone Pony as the show rolled on. The band performed “Lazy Susan,” which was debuted during the celebratory concert.
Jeremy Kaplan shouted out New Jersey and all the love and support the local community has shown them. With that in mind, he welcomed the horn section from fellow Asbury Park-based band Ocean Avenue Stompers. Dogs In A Pile and their guests treated fans to brass-infused versions of live mainstays “My Disguise,” “Trunk Rum,” “Let U Go” and “EDM Song.”
After spending the first 37 minutes of the second set stringing together “The Bag,” “Tillie,” “Look Johnny” and “Look Johnny 2,” DIAP lit into crowd pleaser “Go Set.” An instrumental section from the Grateful Dead’s disco-tinged “Dancing In The Street” cover flowed out of “Go Set” before the band wrapped up the song. The hometown heroes ended their second set with the rollicking “Chop Shop.”
Dogs In A Pile served up a powerful take on Rage Against The Machine’s “Bulls On Parade” to begin their encore. Crew member Mr. Tooker then helped the band punctuate the concert by lending his vocals to the silly “Tookin’ Around” finale.
