Death Cab for Cutie returned to the airwaves last night for a performance of “Riptides” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The reflective song is featured on their soon-to-be-released album, I Built You A Tower, which will be supported with an extensive world tour.
I Built You A Tower arrives this Friday, June 5 via the quintet’s new label ANTI- Records. Death Cab reunited with producer and engineer John Congleton for the 11-track follow-up to 2022’s Asphalt Meadows. Frontman Ben Gibbard and his bandmates primarily recorded the new LP over a three-week period at Animal Rites, Congleton’s Los Angeles studio. Members of the band recorded additional parts remotely at their home studios.
“Riptides” is the lead single from I Built You A Tower and features a driving beat and documents personal loss experienced by Gibbard. “’Riptides’ is about the challenge of dealing with personal struggles as the world around us experiences tragedy and loss on an unfathomable scale,” noted Ben. “And how when these two elements intertwine themselves in our psyches, it feels utterly paralyzing.”
Death Cab For Cutie launches a world tour surrounding I Built You A Tower on July 10 in Minneapolis. The group will traverse North America through August before a run across Europe and fall dates in Asia and Australia.
