Dead & Company Return For Night Two At Madison Square Garden

Dead & Company tour rolled on last night for the second of three performances at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Three shows into the run, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti are still making their first pass through the massive Grateful Dead live repertoire and had plenty of “heavy hitters” left for Sunday’s show.

The show off to an early start at 7:15 with the Sunday tradition of Weir belting out “Samson & Delilah.” Following “Minglewood Blues,” Mayer had his only turns of the evening on lead vocals on “Bertha,” “Sugaree” and “Friend Of The Devil.” The latter was played at a slower pace similar to the Dead Set version than the pace at which many post-Jerry bands have performed “FOTD.” Bobby was back in the spotlight for “Crazy Fingers” before all the band’s vocalists added to the “Uncle John’s Band” set closer.

Bob Weir sang each and every song in the second set including “Fire On The Mountain,” a tune he hasn’t sung with past Dead-related projects. With Weir on vocals, Mayer focused on shredding through such songs as “Shakedown Street,” “Dark Star” and “Wharf Rat.” The second set came to a close with a “Playing In The Band Reprise” that gave way to “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Band.” Dead & Company’s lone encore saw Weir lead a sing-a-long rendition of “Ripple.” The tour continues on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
