Dead & Company Kick Off Visit To Colorado
By Scott Bernstein Nov 25, 2015 • 8:00 am PST
We’re approaching the home stretch of Dead & Company‘S Fall Tour as Grateful Dead members Bill Kreutzmann, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart along with John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti have two stops left before taking a month off ahead of a New Year’s Run. Last night Dead & Company played the first of two shows at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado following a day off in which some of the band members took advantage of what the state has to offer.
First up for the sextet was a Mayer-led “Cold Rain & Snow.” Dead & Company has showed a propensity for inventive song sequences and on Tuesday delivered “New Speedway Boogie” > “Smokestack Lightning” > “New Speedway Boogie.” “Smokestack,” a Howlin’ Wolf cover, was the evening’s lone debut as the band has still yet to play a show that hasn’t featured at least one first-timer. Weir had plenty of turns fronting the group in the first set on such songs as “Me & My Uncle” and the set-closing “Lost Sailor” > “Saint Of Circumstance” section.
Dead & Company came out of the gates for the second set with the beloved “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower” triumvirate. “Estimated Prophet” and the open-ended “Dark Star” gave way to Hart and Kreutzmann holding down the fort on the psychedelic “Drums” segment. After the Rhythm Devils pounded away Hart contributed to the jams in “Space” that eventually led into “Black Peter.” The tour’s second “Good Lovin'” brought the second set to a close, while “Touch Of Grey” served as encore. Dead & Company returns to the 1stBank Center tonight.
