Dead & Company Performs With High School Jazz Band At Hollywood Bowl

Dead & Company began their concert Tuesday at the Hollywood Bowl with the assistance of the Los Angeles High School Jazz Band. The special guests helped kick off the show with a portion of a John Coltrane classic that segued into a Grateful Dead favorite.

LA High School principal Dr. Travis Brandy introduced the guest musicians, who were then joined by Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti and Oteil Burbridge for part of Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme.” The band and special guests eventually launched into “Shakedown Street,” that saw the members of the jazz group filing off stage after the opening sequence. Weir went acoustic on the subsequent “Friend Of The Devil” and then led the group through “Ramble On Rose.” Mayer was in the lead for “Brown-Eyed Women” ahead of Weir’s “Cassidy.” Burbridge was given the vocal spotlight for the set-closing “Fire On The Mountain.”

The second set started with an expansive “Estimated Prophet” whose jam incorporated hints of “A Love Supreme.” The improvisation transitioned to “Truckin’” which worked its way into “He’s Gone.” The action continued with the back-to-back pairings of “St. Stephen” and “Turn On Your Lovelight” leading up to the “Drums” segment of the set. Hart and Kreutzmann were joined by Burbridge for the free-form percussion jam. More “A Love Supreme” was injected into the “Space” that emerged from “Drums.” Weir-led takes on “Standing On The Moon” and “U.S. Blues” brought an end to the set. The tender ballad “Brokedown Palace” filled the encore slot on Tuesday night, capping the band’s two night’s at the famed L.A. venue.
