Dead & Company Bring ‘Easy Wind’ To Portland

On Friday night, Dead & Company brought their Summer Tour to the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. The band featuring Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann alongside Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti and John Mayer, offered an early highlight by performing for the first time together one of the Dead’s classic songs.

The show in PDX began with Weir leading the ensemble through “Feel Like A Stranger.” Next came the debut Dead & Co. live rendition of the Robert Hunter-penned Dead-rarity “Easy Wind” which saw Mayer handle the vocals originally laid down by Ron “Pigpen” McKernan on the Dead’s famed Workingman’s Dead LP. Bobby then took the band through a slinky “Tennessee Jed” and Mayer helmed the slow burning “West L.A. Fadeaway.” Weir’s regularly paired “Lost Sailor” > “Saint Of Circumstance” came before a romping “Don’t Ease Me In” brought about set break.

Set two opened with “Here Comes Sunshine” ahead of the common duo of “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider.” A nicely stretched out “Viola Lee Blues” chugged into The Rhythm Devils’ taking over for the nightly “Drums” improvisation. Burbridge joined in on Billy’s kit while Mickey at times utilized his theremin and broke out a bow to produce a deep drone on The Beam as they transitioned to a blissful “Space” jam that emerged when the full band returned to the stage. A cover of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” developed out of “Space” and an energetic “The Wheel” wrapped up the night, interpolating a bit of the doo-wop hit “Stay” as it drew to an end. Bobby’s “Sugar Magnolia” began the encore before an acoustic rendering of “Ripple” concluded the concert.

Dead & Company play again tonight at the majestic The Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. A webcast is available via Below watch official footage of each set’s opening song from last night.
