David John Sheppard: Vertical Land

David John Sheppard’s first solo effort is titled Vertical Land which is only slightly more poetic than calling it “mountains” which is the inspiration for this music. The result is a gorgeous, high-altitude ambient: Brian Eno in a low- oxygen atmosphere, floating over the stark angular landscapes of Mother Nature. Sheppard employs guitars and percussion, marimbas, piano, low-key electronics and more to create slow-moving, constantly-evolving soundscapes that are perfect for mellow introspection and just plain chilling out.

Ross Hammond: Flight

Ross Hammond’s new album, Flight – a new acoustic, instrumental project for the Sacramento guitarist – is self-described as “spiritual” music. Indeed it opens with the classic spiritual “Nobody Knows the Troubles I’ve Seen” amongst other traditionals and hymns as well as originals. The music hums with soul and purpose, resonating both literally and figuratively with Hammond’s 6- and 12-string guitar prowess adding a jazz-man’s improvisational and open-ended feel to each song. Perfect for Sunday mornings or just about any day of the week.
