David Gilmour Wants Out Of The ‘Mud Bath’: Dreams Of Selling Pink Floyd Catalog

“To be rid of the decision making and the arguments that are involved with keeping it going is my dream.”

Many legacy acts have sold their catalog in recent years for huge sums of cash. Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour wants the band to join that club but says the money isn’t the biggest motivating factor in his “dream” to sell the catalog.

David Gilmour has a long-simmering feud with former bandmate Roger Waters. The conflict is seemingly behind his desire to divest his interest in the Pink Floyd catalog as he explained in a recent Rolling Stone interview.

Rolling Stone’s Andy Greene asked Gilmour about reports the Pink Floyd catalog would be sold and if that is still a possibility. “Is it something that is still in discussion,” Gilmour responded. The guitarist then revealed why he’d like to sell.

“To be rid of the decision making and the arguments that are involved with keeping it going is my dream,” Gilmour said without mentioning Roger Waters by name. “If things were different… and I am not interested in that from a financial standpoint. I’m only interested in it from getting out of the mud bath that it has been for quite a while.”

Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason are the three surviving members of Pink Floyd. Greene brought up how difficult it must be to get majority approval for any decision. “Well, that’s not actually the way it’s worked. It works on a veto system. You could say it’s three people saying yes, but one person saying no,” Gilmour explained.

David Gilmour was pushed by Greene to discuss his “current impasse” with Roger Waters.” Well, it’s something I’ll talk about one day, but I’m not going to talk about that right now,” Gilmour responded. “It’s boring. It’s over. As I said before, he left our pop group when I was in my 30s, and I’m a pretty old chap now, and the relevance of it is not there. I don’t really know his work since. So I don’t have anything to say on the topic.”

Later this month, David Gilmour will kick off his first tour since 2016 in Rome. While Gilmour previously said he had an “unwillingness to revisit the Pink Floyd of the Seventies” during the run, he clarified his position to Greene.

“One has to wake up to reality once in a while. I think I will be doing one or two things from that time, but it just seems so long ago,” Gilmour said. “I know people love them, and I love playing them. I’ll be doing ‘Wish You Were Here,’ of course I will. And some of the things that started with me anyway.” Gilmour also mentioned he’ll “quite likely” perform “Comfortably Numb” and is still working on the setlist.

David Gilmour will release Luck And Strange, his first new solo album in nearly a decade, this Friday, September 6 via Sony Music. Gilmour’s upcoming tour consists of multi-night runs in Rome, London, Los Angeles and New York City. A full list of dates can be found by scrolling below.
