David Byrne returned to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday for a performance of “I Zimbra” and a chat with the host. Byrne was joined by the cast of American Utopia for the Talking Heads classic.

David Byrne’s American Utopia is currently in the middle of its latest run on Broadway at New York City’s St. James Theatre. The Talking Heads frontman spoke with Colbert about how his show was brought to Broadway, how he kept busy during the start of the pandemic by drawing and taught Stephen a series of non-traditional dance moves.

Byrne led into “I Zimbra” by telling the story behind a song originally released on Talking Heads’ 1979 album Fear Of Music. He explained the words came from by Dadaist author Hugo Ball. David and the American Utopia cast then presented a highly choreographed and theatrical version of “I Zimbra.”
