David Bowie’s 1973 album Aladdin Sane is receiving a 50th-anniversary reissue. The half-speed remastered edition will arrive on April 14. Today (January 10) marks seven years since David Bowie passed away.
Aladdin Sane arrived on April 20, 1973 just 10 months after Bowie’s breakthrough album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Aladdin Sane featured the Spiders From Mars backing band — Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey — along with the addition of pianist Mark Garson. Bowie characterized the album as “Ziggy Goes to Washington: Ziggy under the influence of America.”

The 1973 album marked the final chapter in the Ziggy Stardust era, with Bowie putting the persona to rest at the famed finale with the Spiders From Mars in July 1973 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. Ziggy Stardust lives on, however, in the cover art for Aladdin Sane, the picture of “Ziggy” with the blue and red lightning bolt is one of the most iconic images in rock ‘n’ roll.
Aladdin Sane is now receiving the 50th anniversary treatment, namely a half-speed remaster. Half-speed mastering is when the disc-cutting lathe for a vinyl record is run at half the speed, basically leading to better sound quality. Aladdin Sane will be available on a 50th anniversary LP as well as a picture disc.
