In the Fall of 1971, the Grateful Dead embarked upon a tour with new keyboardist Keith Godchaux. Ron “Pigpen” McKernan was resting up during most of the run, as Keith got his sea legs under him. An upcoming installment of Dave’s Picks will feature two full shows from Dead Fall Tour 1971 including one with Pigpen and one without.

Dave’s Picks subscriptions are up for sale and as previously reported the first release of the year for the live archival series will be the Dead’s famed November 6, 1977 show from Binghamton as Dave’s Picks Vol. 25. An email from the Dead aims to entice fans to buy subscriptions by revealing Dave’s Picks Vol. 26 will contain the band’s November 17, 1971 performance. The group made their New Mexico debut that night in Albuquerque.

The third disc of the release features half of the Grateful Dead’s visit to Ann Arbor on December 14, 1971. A bonus disc contains the rest of the Ann Arbor show previously mentioned, so Dave’s Picks Vol. 26 is a rare release in the series that includes a pair of full shows. Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux selects the old Dead shows issued by the band as part of the series.

Lemieux shared the following, “For Dave’s Picks Vol. 26, we’re heading back to the Fall of 1971, when Pigpen was home resting, and Keith was a month into his tenure with the Grateful Dead, for the complete show on 11/17/71 in Albuquerque. This was the Dead’s first show in New Mexico, and they welcomed the welcoming New Mexican crowd with some of the best music they played in all of 1971. The 15-song first set is only outdone by the spectacular second set, featuring one of the most powerful and intense versions of ‘The Other One’ you’ll ever hear, as well as a ‘Not Fade Away’ that rivals the one played two nights earlier on 11/15/71 in Austin. Add to this that CD 3 is rounded out with half of the 12/14/71 show in Ann Arbor (with Pigpen back on stage!), and the 2018 Dave’s Picks Subscribers’ Bonus Disc features the other half of 12/14/71, and you have a release featuring two of the best shows of the second half of 1971.”

Subscriptions close at 11:59 p.m. PT on Friday night if they don’t sell out ahead of that time. Head here to purchase. Look for Vol. 26 in the spring.
