Dave Matthews Band Welcomes Preservation Hall Jazz Band At Finale At The Gorge

On Sunday night Dave Matthews Band wrapped up their three-night run at The Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. For their finale in The Evergreen State, the jam act was joined by the members of one of their opening act, along with unearthing a true rarity during their encore.

Dave Matthews & Co. would keep their fans on their toes last night as they dipped into their songbook mixing setlist staples with a number of tunes that haven’t been featured as prominently this summer. DMB got their night underway with the longtime fan-favorite “One Sweet World.” The band reached for “#27” for just the fourth time this summer next. The tune which was revived earlier this year for the first time since 2014, hadn’t seen action since June. After a take on “So Much To Say” the band welcomed out the members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who had served as an opener throughout the run. After a New Orleans-tinged jam the augmented ensemble dug in the Come Tomorrow track “That Girl Is You.”

As the band hit the midway point of their 18-song main set they treated fans to just their third ever take on Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” which was debuted with Wonder last year at their Concert for Charlottesville benefit show. The iconic Talkng Book tune was followed by just their second version of “Proudest Monkey” this summer. The back half of their night featured classics like “Tripping Billies,” “Typical Situation,” “The Song That Jane Likes” and “Ants Marching.”

The band also delivered a number of songs that hadn’t seen much action on their current run. “Captain” was trotted out for its fifth version after it had been dusted off for the first time since 2015 back in June, while “Lie In Our Graves” found its way into the setlist for just the sixth time. Then, “Hello Again” got played for the ninth time after it had been sitting on the shelf since 2010. Dave Matthews Band saved its biggest surprise of the night to start their three-song encore as they served up “Butterfly.” The unreleased rarity had last seen action on September 12, 2015, and was played for just the 16th time ever. DMB brought their trio of shows at The Gorge to a close with their cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” and “Corn Bread” – both of which have been played less than ten times this summer.
