Dave Matthews Band Busts Out ‘Cry Freedom,’ Welcome Guest & Announce TV Appearance

After 25 years of touring with few breaks in between, the Dave Matthews Band are expected to take the next 16 months off and possibly more following this evening’s show at The Gorge. DMB is continuing a trend of Labor Day weekend performances at the George, Washington venue this weekend and last night had a few surprises in store. It has also been revealed TNT will air the first concert the Dave Matthews Band played this tour next Sunday.

On Sunday, September 11 TNT will air an installment of Neighboorhood Sessions recorded live at Dave Matthews Band’s 25th Anniversary Concert on May 7 in Charlottesville, Virginia. The concert film is said to pair live footage with backstage interviews. DMB’s episode of Neighboorhood Sessions will air at 10 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 11.

Last night DMB played their penultimate show before beginning the longest break of their career. The biggest surprise of the night came in response to a fan’s sign asking for the return of “Cry Freedom.” Matthews and his mates dusted off the rarely played Crash ballad for the first time since July 31, 2015 towards the middle of their Saturday night set at The Gorge. Saturday’s show also saw Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Carlos Malta add sax and flute to the first “Bartender” in 26 shows, “Cry Freedom” and the tour’s usual “Jimi Thing” > “Sexy M.F.” (Prince) pairing. While setlists from the tour haven’t included too much variance, DMB is doing a good job of switching it up over three nights of The Gorge. No song performed on Night Two had been played within the past four shows and in addition to “Bartender” and “Cry Freedom,” the concert also featured the first “Shake Me Like A Monkey” in 29 shows and first “Raven” in 17 shows.

Dave Matthews Band will play their final show of 2016 and perhaps until 2018 tonight.
