Dave Matthews Band and Béla Fleck and the Flecktones teamed up for “Two Step” on this date in 2002. DMB welcomed Béla and company to close out the main set with a 23-minute version of the classic.
Dave Matthews Band and Béla Fleck And The Flecktones go back a long way. The bands went on tour together beginning in 1996 and delivered a number of memorable collaborations, most notably a pairing of “#41” with The Flecktones’ “Soujourn Of Arjuna.” Béla contributed to DMB’s 1998 album Before These Crowded Streets. The groups are also linked through former Flecktones saxophonist, Jeff Coffin, who joined Dave Matthews Band in 2008.

Six years previous, DMB and The Flecktones were on separate tours, but managed to get together in Montreal on this date in 2002. This time, the bands teamed up for a massive “Two Step” to close out DMB’s main set. These are top-notch musicians: bassists Victor Wooten and Stefan Lessard, drummers Carter Beauford and Futureman, Jeff Coffin and late DMB saxophonist LeRoi Moore; the stellar fiddler Boyd Tinsley and longtime DMB keyboardist Butch Taylor; Dave and Béla. It’s an amazing collaboration.
