Dave Grohl Joins Beck & Tenacious D On ‘Summer Breeze’ Cover At Largo
John C. Reilly and Greg Kurstin also contributed to the Seals & Crofts classic at the Judd Apatow-organized benefit concert in Los Angeles.
Beck shared the stage with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, Tenacious D, actor/musician John C. Reilly and acclaimed producer Greg Kurstin for a cover of Seals & Croft’s 1972 hit “Summer Breeze” last night at Largo in Los Angeles. The performance came during Beck’s headlining set at a benefit concert put together by filmmaker Judd Apatow to benefit Victims First, “a network of surviving victims of mass casualty crime and trusted supporters who have first-hand experiences of the problems and re-victimisation that accompany these acts when there is a lack of coordinated effort and/or understanding of what survivors need.”
Tuesday’s “Summer Breeze” featured Beck and Kyle Gass on guitar, Gass’ Tenacious D bandmate Jack Black on lead vocals, Reilly on harmony vocals with Kurstin accompanying on piano. Grohl emerged from the side of the stage to sing the lead guitar riff at the heart of the song written by Jim Seals and Dash Crofts. As pointed out in Variety’s report, last night was one of Dave Grohl’s first public appearances in the wake of Foo Fighters’ drummer Taylor Hawkins’ death on March 25.

Variety noted Beck played an acoustic set featuring Kurstin on piano that included “Cyanide Breathmint,” “Debra” and “Truckdriving Neigbors Downstairs.” John C. Reilly was aboard for the latter which came just before the “Summer Breeze” cover. Reilly also handled lead vocals on a show-closing version of The Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers.”
The Apatow-organized event began with the filmmaker and comedian Pete Holmes speaking to the crowd and telling jokes before Tenacious D first appeared. Kyle Gass and Jack Black played what Variety described as a “short set” that “culminated in a faithful singalong of REO Speedwagon’s ‘I’m Gonna Keep on Loving You’ to rapturous applause.” Additionally, Sarah Silverman took the stage for standup comedy ahead of Beck’s set.
Beck next performs at the Beach Road Weekend festival on Martha’s Vineyard later this month.
