Dark Star Orchestra Welcomes Back Rob Eaton In Boulder
Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra began a series of three concerts at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado on Thursday night. Rob Eaton, the band’s Bob Weir, returned to the fold after he had missed the previous two shows to deal with a family emergency.
Dark Star Orchestra went with an elective setlist for night one in Boulder instead of their more usual tradition of utilizing a past Grateful Dead setlist. Eaton was immediately put into the spotlight with a “Feel Like A Stranger” opener. The first set featured a varied collection of material including a “Me & My Uncle” > “Cumberland Blues” sequence, a rendition of “Expressway (To Your Heart)” and a Lisa Mackey-sung “Sunrise.” DSO closed out the frame with “The Music Never Stopped.”
Thursday’s second set began with “Shakedown Street” and continued with an Eaton-led “Lost Sailor” > “Saint Of Circumstance” pairing. “Foolish Heart” led into “Drums”/”Space” which was followed by a sequence of “Dark Star” > “Alligator” > “Wharf Rat” > “Sugar Magnolia.” Dark Star Orchestra concluded the evening by covering Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” as the encore.
