Add “podcast host” to Dark Star Orchestra drummer Rob Koritz‘s resume. Koritz helms The Music Plays The Band, a new show in which he welcomes musicians to discuss the influence of the Grateful Dead on their lives and careers.

Rob decided to put his efforts into The Music Plays The Band after the pandemic forced Dark Star Orchestra off the road. He began connecting with fans via Q&As and started to bring along some guests. He was then approached by old friends Brothers Lazaroff to put together a podcast. “I get to talk with some of my favorite musicians, getting to connect on why and how the Grateful Dead influences their music, their work ethic and other insights you’ll want to tune in to hear,” Koritz said in a statement.

The first two episodes of The Music Plays The Band are now available with Koritz’s DSO band mate Rob Barraco featured in the premiere installment and Keller Williams appearing in the second. Upcoming guests include Kenny Withrow of The New Bohemians, moe. drummer Vinnie Amico and Ben Kaufmann of Yonder Mountain String Band.

Each episode consists of an interview with a featured guest as well as three mini-segments. “The Black Music Moment” highlights the influence of Black Music on the Grateful Dead’s sound, while audio guru Brad Sarno dives into the sonic secrets of the Dead for “The Sarno Music Solutions Breakdown.” Additionally, “There’s A Grateful Dead Cover Band In Every Town” will find Koritz chatting with members of local Grateful Dead cover bands from around the country about the scene in their community.

Rob also launched a Patreon page for The Music Plays The Band. Those who purchase subscriptions can access exclusive content including outtakes and monthly one-on-one video conversations with Koritz. “I hope you’ll take a listen to our initial episodes! We have great conversations with tremendous musicians, plus we have some really great bonus content and opportunities to get to know me a little better,” added Koritz.
