Michael Kang Guests With Dark Star Orchestra In Felton

Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra welcomed The String Cheese Incident‘s Michael Kang to sit-in on Saturday. Kang joined DSO for “Eyes Of The World” during the group’s second of three shows at Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, California.

Dark Star Orchestra kicked off the weekend on Friday by replicating the Grateful Dead’s setlist from 49 years earlier at U.K.’s Bickershaw Festival. The show was DSO’s 3,000th concert.

Kang emerged towards the end of Saturday’s first set to add electric mandolin on “Eyes Of The World” as DSO went with an “elective setlist” featuring material from various GD eras as well as a cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” to end the evening.

Last night’s finale saw Dark Star Orchestra use the setlist from the Grateful Dead’s May 9, 1977 show in Buffalo 44 years prior. The band said farewell with a “Ripple” filler. DSO bassist Skip Vangelas played Phil Lesh’s “Mission Control” bass throughout the weekend, while guitarist Jeff Mattson played Jerry Garcia’s “Alligator” axe.
