Multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby brought the latest iteration of his Crosby Collective project to the Mill Valley Music Festival last Saturday (May 10). The ensemble devoted their hour-long set at the Bay Area event to a series of creative mashups Crosby has dreamed up.
Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools held down the bottom end for Crosby Collective for the duration of the performance. Jason Crosby was also joined by drummer John Morgan Kimock, keyboardist Jeremy Jeffers, guitarist Tom Guarna and pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz along with vocalists Lamar Williams Jr., Aletha Mills and AnDre Washington.

After working through an overture mixing small portions of multiple songs, Mills fronted Crosby Collective on a mashup of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” and Grateful Dead classic “Black Dog” to launch the set. Next came “I Know You Rider” sung to the tune of Phish’s “Tweezer Reprise.” The band then mashed the Grateful Dead’s “Casey Jones” with Pink Floyd’s “Eclipse.”
Crosby Collective’s set continued with a track mixing The Doors’ “Riders On The Storm” and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” that they segued into a fairly straight-forward “Shakedown Street.” From there, the group dropped ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky” into the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life” before intertwining Allman Brothers Band gems “Blue Sky,” “Dreams” and “Melissa” with the Dead’s “Jack Straw.”
Jason Crosby & Co. followed with a mashup of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and the Wings hit “Band On The Run.” Vocalist Elliott Peck then emerged to sing Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well,” which was mixed with U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” Peck stuck around as the Crosby Collective transitioned into the “Friend Of The Lithium” Grateful Dead/Nirvana mashup that Jason composed years ago and eventually birthed his current project.
