Guitarists Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile teamed up last year to release their collaborative album Lotta Sea Lice. A new documentary film, Friends Of Wonder, gives a look into how the pair’s friendship came together.
Directed by Kurt Vincent and Irene Chin and presented by WeTransfer and Matador Records, Friends Of Wonder was filmed in 2017 at Loew’s Jersey Theatre. Barnett and Vile were at the community-run historic venue in Jersey City, New Jersey to play a concert on their tour in support of Lotta Sea Lice.
They were joined onstage by keyboardist Katie Harkin, bassist Rob Laakso and drummer Stella Mozgawa. Along with interviews with Barnett and Vile, the documentary intersperses live scenes from the show, including portions of the Lotta Sea Lice opening track “Over Everything,” as well as Vile’s “Life Like This,” Barnett’s “Avant Gardener” and Gillian Welch’s “Elvis Presley Blues.”
