Courtney Barnett Covers Elyse Weinberg For ‘Spotify Singles’

Guitarist Courtney Barnett recently stopped by Spotify Studios in New York City to record a session for the streaming platform’s live series Spotify Singles. The singer-songwriter performed a track from her new album Tell Me How You Really Feel and covered a classic song by Canadian folk musician Elyse Weinberg.

Barnett’s Spotify Singles session features a live take on “Charity,” which was one the 10 songs that make up Tell Me How You Really Feel. Backed by drummer Dave Mudie, bassist Bones Sloane and multi-instrumentalist Katie Harkin, Barnett also led a cover of “Houses,” which was originally recorded by Weinberg in 1969. That recording, which was intended for a never-released follow-up to Weinberg’s self-titled debut LP, featured fellow Canadian Neil Young, as well as Nils Lofgren, J.D. Souther and Kenny Edwards.

Numero Group formally released Weinberg’s “lost” album Greasepaint Smile in 2015. Stream Barnett’s performance of “Charity” and “Houses” below:
