On March 27, 2008 Counting Crows performed a cover of the Grateful Dead‘s “Friend Of The Devil” during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. Pro-shot video featuring Counting Crow’s rendition of the song was recently shared on the Stern Show’s YouTube channel.
Stern asked Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz if there are songs the band likes to cover. Duritz responded that he and Crows multi-instrumentalist David Immerglück debuted a cover of “Friend Of The Devil” during one of their “The Devil & Bunny Show” performances in New Orleans and it went so well they taught the song off the Dead’s 1970 album American Beauty to the rest of the band.
Counting Crows added “Friend Of The Devil” to their repertoire for a 2003 summer tour. The band has since covered the GD classic over 140 times as per Setlist.FM. “Friend Of The Devil” made Counting Crows setlists a handful of times last year including its most recent performance on September 18, 2018 at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
