Cory Wong Teams With Old Cohort Ben Rector On Sultry New Song ‘Ready’

Guitarist Cory Wong recruited previous collaborator, singer-songwriter Ben Rector for the newly released single, “Ready.” The track will appear on Wong’s forthcoming studio album The Lucky One, which will be released later this year.

Wong previously shared the single, “Look At Me” featuring singer-songwriter Allen Stone. Additional guests and The Lucky One tracklist will be revealed with subsequently released singles.

Wong shared the statement below about his latest collab with Rector:

“This song started when my friend Aaron Sterling said, ‘Hey I’ve got a drum sample pack coming out, you wanna try jamming over one of the loops? I opened up his sample pack and played the first thing that came to mind when I heard the first loop. I built an instrumental hook and rhythm section around it and posted it to Instagram which caught the attention of my friend Ben Rector.

“Ben is an incredible singer/songwriter whom I toured with for a few years. He saw my video and said, ‘Do you have any plans for this tune? I am hearing a topline on it and want to send you some ideas.’ Within minutes we were writing the song together, sending ideas back and forth over voice text.

“I recorded all of the instruments over the initial drum loop that Aaron sent and then decided that it would feel much better if we had him just play the same thing with the same sounds, but all the way through so it had more of a live feel to it. It’s a song that features Ben’s brilliant but simple song/lyric writing, and my guitar style in a unique way that really showcases the collaborative side of this particular song.”

“Cory and I are good friends and go way back (he played in my band before exploding to funk guitar superstardom),” added Rector. “I saw an Instagram post of him playing over an Aaron Sterling drum loop and started freestyling over it, and a few minutes later I texted him and said we should make it into a song. We sent it back and forth tweaking little things and I think it came together nicely. It was a joy to work on and I’m excited for the song to be out in the world!”
