Acclaimed jazz bassist Christian McBride brought his New Jawn project to NPR Studios for a Tiny Desk Concert. The quartet performed songs from their 2023 album Prime and more.

Christian McBride’s New Jawn is woodwind specialist Marcus Strickland, trumpeter Josh Evans and drummer Nasheet Waits. The quartet released their self-titled debut album in 2018 and followed with Prime, which arrived on February 24.

McBride — who is no stranger to NPR as host of Jazz Night In America — and company kicked off their Tiny Desk set with the aptly named “Head Bedlam,” a song that begins with a cacophonous noise making session that McBride noted was a musical interpretation of scrolling through Twitter. “Head Bedlam” is also the opening track on Prime.

The quartet continued with the Marcus Strickland-composed title track to their latest album with Waits reeling off a raucous drum solo. The band returned to their 2018 self-titled debut to wrap the session with “Walkin’ Funny,” which featured a solo from McBride.
