Acclaimed bassist Christian McBride reassembled his Grammy-nominated Christian McBride’s New Jawn ensemble earlier this year for the 2023 studio album, Prime, and a series of shows in support of the LP. The quartet hit the studios of Seattle-based independent radio station KEXP in September and today video of the four-song session has been released.

Christian McBride’s New Jawn features McBride on upright bass accompanied by trumpeter Josh Evans, saxophonist and bass clarinetist Marcus Strickland and drummer Nasheet Waits. McBride initially put together the group that takes its name from a slang term used in his hometown of Philadelphia for a person, place or thing in 2015. The four-piece released a self-titled studio album in 2018 and their sophomore effort, Prime, earlier this year.

The session hosted by KEXP’s Troy Nelson features performances of two songs each from Christian McBride’s New Jawn and Prime. Up first was the wild Josh Evans-penned Eric Dolphy tribute off Prime “Dolphy Dust.” Strickland started on sax and moved to bass clarinet for “John Day,” a song McBride wrote to honor a longtime friend.

Both “John Day” and the ensuing “Kush” are featured on the group’s debut album. The latter was penned by Nasheet Waits. Christian McBride’s New Jaun returned to Prime for “The Good Life” finale. McBride then discussed his illustrious career with Troy Nelson.
