Tedeschi Trucks Band recruited hundreds of acts as support over the past 14 years since the group was formed in 2010. However on Saturday, June 15 the TTB had a rare turn opening for another artist when they along with Marcus King served as Chris Stapleton‘s special guests during the outlaw country artist’s All-American Road Show concert at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. TTB co-leaders Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks emerged during Stapleton’s headlining set to collaborate with Chris on his song “I Was Wrong.”
Chris Stapleton has had and will continue to employ a varied and impressive roster of special guests to open his All-American Road Show concerts this year. Saturday marked TTB’s lone performance as part of the tour though Tedeschi and Trucks sat-in with Chris Stapleton on a cover of the David Allan Coe-popularized “Tennessee Whiskey” last month during Stapleton’s show in Susan and Derrek’s hometown of Jacksonville.

Marcus King kicked off the action in the Dallas area on Saturday with a set of his own before the 12 members of Tedeschi Trucks Band loaded the stage. The TTB mixed material from their 2022 I Am The Moon album cycle (“Hear My Dear,” “Playing With My Emotions”), beloved favorites (“Anyhow,” “Midnight In Harlem,” “I Want More”) and a choice batch of covers (Jeff Beck’s “Beck’s Bolero,” John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery,” Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree,” Joe Cocker version of “Space Captain”) to form the setlist for their set.
Chris Stapleton delivered a 26-song performance at massive home of Major League Baseball’s 2023 championship-winning Texas Rangers. Stapleton welcomed Marcus King to duet on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “I Should’ve Known It,” a tune from the late rocker’s severely-underrated 2010 album Mojo. Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell performed “I Should’ve Known It” with Chris Stapleton four times earlier this month.

The Stapleton/King collaboration came in the middle of Chris’ set. Chris Stapleton brought out Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi a few songs later for the aforementioned “I Was Wrong.” Written with Craig Wiseman, Stapleton originally released the tune on his sophomore solo studio album, From A Room: Volume 1, in 2017.
Chris Stapleton and Susan Tedeschi took turns belting out the vocals as they engaged in a riveting duet that saw each vocalist show off their incredible range and singing skills. Stapleton took the first guitar solo before Tedeschi peeled off an emotion-laden run. Derek Trucks peaked the slow-burning “I Was Wrong” with a fierce string of fretboard fireworks that drove the crowd wild. Trucks, Stapleton and Tedeschi traded a few soul-laden licks to bring the collaboration to a close.
