Chris Robinson Brotherhood Debut John Lennon Cover At The Capitol Theatre

Last night Chris Robinson Brotherhood kicked-off a string of Northeast dates with a gig at The Capitol Theatre in the New York City suburb of Port Chester. The former Black Crowes frontman treated the crowd to two sets that mixed CRB originals with a diverse set covers and was capped with an encore featuring their debut performance of an iconic John Lennon song.

Chris Robinson led the group through an opening take on the rockabilly classic “Seven Nights To Rock.” “High Is Not The Top” from their recently released Barefoot In The Sky and “Tulsa Yesterday” from 2012’s Bad Moon Ritual followed. CRB next looked to Waylon Jennings for a cover of “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line” from Outlaw Country singer’s 1968 release Only The Greatest next. The band filled out the rest of their opening stanza with takes on “Clear Blue Sky & The Good Doctor,” “Sunday Sound” from Robinson’s days front New Earth Mud, “Vibration & Light Suite” from 2012’s The Magic Door and “I Ain’t Hiding” from The Black Crowes 2009 double-album Before the Frost…Until the Freeze.

The California-based psychedelic rock act got their second set underway with their recently debuted cover of Roy Orbison’s “Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream).” CRB leaned heavily on tracks from Barefoot In The Head throughout the set, offering up takes on “She Shares My Blanket,” “Behold The Seer,” “Hark, The Herald Hermit Speaks” and “Good To Know,” while also mixing in tunes from 2014’s Phosphorescent Harvest and 2016’s Any Way You Love, We Know How You Feel.

The encore at The Cap saw Robinson leading the ensemble on their first performance of John Lennon’s “Watching The Wheels.” The tune originally appeared on Lennon’s 1980 posthumously released record Double Fantasy, and was the final of three singles from that album reaching number ten on the Billboard’s Hot 100.
