Soul singer Charles Bradley has died at the age of 68. His death from stomach cancer was confirmed in statement issued by his representatives.

Bradley was born November 5, 1948 in Gainesville, Florida. In the 1990s Bradley performed as a James Brown impersonator under the name Black Velvet. Later called The Screaming Eagle Of Soul, Bradley was 62 when Daptone Records issued his first album, 2011’s No Time For Dreaming. Subsequent Daptone releases included 2013’s Victim Of Love and 2016’s Changes.

Bradley was diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2016. He died on September 23 in Brooklyn, “surrounded by family and friends including members of the bands he worked closely with: Menahan Street Band, His Extraordinaires, Budos Band and the Jimmy Hill Allstarz– his band from his time performing as Black Velvet.”

Donations can be made in Bradley’s memory to the All-Stars Project and Music Unites.
