Jam In The Sand :: 01.19-23.17 :: Jewel Paradise Cove :: Runaway Bay, Jamaica ::

This year marks the 20th anniversary for quintessential Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra, who played theif first gig at Martyr’s in Chicago on November 11, 1997 as an experiment and quickly realized there were on to something special. DSO will celebrate the occasion all year long starting with their annual Jam In The Sand destination event at Jewel Paradise Cove in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. The band, who have just announced a particularly cool VIP package that includes the ability to watch soundcheck, were joined for the fifth installment of Jam In The Sand by Donna The Buffalo and Los Lobos.

Jam In The Sand V sold out ahead of time and featured four full DSO shows as well as three Donna The Buffalo sets and three Los Lobos shows. Dark Star Orchestra alternated between beloved Grateful Dead classics such as “Franklin’s Tower,” “Ramble On Rose,” “Estimated Prophet” and “China Cat Sunflower” with rarities including “Sunrise,” “Willie & The Hand Jive” and “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road.” Los Lobos guitarist David Hidalgo was among DSO’s guests as on Night Two he added to “Death Don’t Have No Mercy” and more. Photographer Suzy Perler was once again on hand at DSO’s Jam In The Sand and has shared a full gallery of photos from the event:
