Jaki Liebezeit, the influential founding drummer of seminal Krautrock band Can, has died at the age of 78. The legendary German rock group confirmed his death with a statement issued Sunday.
The message posted by Can read:
It is with great sadness we have to announce that Jaki passed away this morning from sudden pneumonia. He fell asleep peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. We will miss him hugely.
The German-born Liebezeit was integral in the development of the distinctive motorik drum pattern that was essential to Can’s groundbreaking sound. He contributed to such classic Can records as 1971’s Tago Mago, 1972’s Ege Bamyasi and 1973’s Future Days driving infectious rhythms on tracks such as “Mushroom,” “Halleluhwah” and “Future Days.”
Prior to his work in Can he was part of jazz trumpeter Manfred Schoof’s ensemble. His career also featured credits alongside Brian Eno, Michael Rother of Neu!, Eurythmics and many others. In 2013 Liebezeit teamed with Can co-founder Irmin Schmidt as well as collaborators Jono Podmore and Burnt Friedman to release the self-titled Cyclopean EP.
