Phish bassist Mike Gordon wraps a Fall Tour tonight with a show at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado (a free webcast is available here). Gordon and his band are playing in support of his new solo album OGOGO and recent setlists have included songs from the record.
Alongside the new originals have been a batch of new covers brought into the band’s repertoire. This edition of Saturday Stream presents a Spotify Playlist devoted to original versions of songs covered by Cactus and his band. The 40-song set includes the newly added covers as well as many that have been staples of Gordon’s solo project’s shows for years.
Current Gordon band mates guitarist Scott Murawski, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter and percussionist Craig Myers have introduced arrangements of Rancid’s “Ruby Soho” and Tame Impala’s “Mind Mischief” during this tour. The group also recently paid tribute to Tom Petty with a rendition of The Heartbreakers’ “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”
Those songs lead off an eclectic playlist that showcases Gordon’s wide ranging influences. The set has tracks recorded by such renowned acts as The Beatles, David Bowie, Prince, Al Green, The Everly Brothers, Peter Rowan, Harry Nilsson, Bonnie Raitt, Talking Heads, Brian Eno, Robert Palmer, War aad Tower Of Power.
Mike has also covered pop hits by Alanis Morissette, C&C Music Factory and Coldplay, along selections from recent releases by Radiohead, Fiona Apple, The Flaming Lips, Garbage, Mac DeMarco, The Civil Wars and Here We Go Magic. Gordon and his band have also taken on Gillian Welch, Daniel Lanois, Commander Cody and a few others you’ll find in the playlist below:
