New supergroup BTTRFLY Quintet will release their debut album, Coast, via Mocean Records on November 4. The Denver-based five-piece featuring drummer Adam Deitch (Lettuce/Break Science), trumpeter Eric ‘Benny’ Bloom (Lettuce), saxophonist/producer Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic), keyboardist Borahm Lee (Break Science) and bassist/visual artist Hunter Roberts (Break Science) previewed the LP by sharing its title track.
BTTRFLY Quintet was birthed during the dog dogs of the pandemic to give the Denver-based musicians a new creative outlet. The self-described “soul-jazz fusion collective” made its live debut in front of small crowd due to COVID restrictions at Denver’s Cervantes Ballroom a few years back and have since played the Brainquility Festival in Florida and Denver’s art experience space Meow Wolf. “The band filters jazz through their own unique, shared musical languages, having sprouted from their cocoons of isolation and transformed into a new sonic entity dedicated to spreading beauty throughout the world,” noted press materials heralding the album.
“Coast” finds BTTRFLY Quintet exploring throwback tones from the ’70s through a contemporary filter. The cut shows off the lockstep rhythm section, fluid keyboard work and dynamic brass. Stream BTTRFLY Quintet’s “Coast” below:
