Bruce Springsteen sat in with the Trey Anastasio Band yesterday before headlining day two of his year’s Sea.Hear.Now Festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The Boss joined Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio and his band for a performance of “Kitty’s Back.”

Springsteen was busy over the weekend, performing with TAB, The Gaslight Anthem, Robert Randolph and a headlining set with The E Street Band. The 74-year-old Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer previously performed with Anastasio during a sit-in with Phish at Bonnaroo 2009.

Like he did at Bonnaroo, Trey relayed the story of attending his first concert, which was a Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band show on the campus of Princeton University. Speaking to the North Beach crowd, Anastasio stated:

“I grew up in New Jersey. I swam at this beach as a kid. When I was 14-years-old I was allowed to go to my first concert ever. My 16-year-old sister took me. And that concert was the Jadwin Cage, November 1st, 1978 – I saw Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. So if you’re wondering where I got the idea to play like we were just playing, the whole show was like that. And I’m incredibly honored right now — we were backstage and asked Bruce if he would come out and play one with us and he said ‘yes.’ So this a dream of a lifetime for me – ladies and gentlemen, Bruce Springsteen!”

Springsteen then emerged with his iconic Fender Telecaster guitar and embraced Anastasio at the center of the stage. Trey then gave drummer Russ Lawton the signal to count off “Kitty’s Back,” which originally appeared on Springsteen’s 1973 sophomore album, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle.

With an enormous smile across his face, Anastasio initiated a back-and-forth exchange between his Languedoc guitar and Bruce’s Strat. Springsteen and Anastasio shared vocal duties ahead of another spirited guitar workout between the pair of musicians.
