Bruce Springsteen will receive a special Tony Award in recognition of his Springsteen On Broadway production. Springsteen has been performing the storytelling-based show since it opened last October at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
As The New York Times notes, Springsteen joins previous special Tony Award honorees John Cameron Mitchell, Dame Edna, Lena Horne and Bette Midler. The outlet also reported Springsteen purposely did not invite Tony voters to attend Springsteen On Broadway, keeping the production out of the running in other competitive Tony Award categories. Springsteen On Broadway has been extended twice, with performances currently running through mid-December.
Springsteen has won numerous Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for his song “Streets Of Philadelphia” from the 1993 film Philadelphia. The 2018 Tony Awards will be hosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban and broadcast live on CBS from Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, June 10.
